Avoiding the elephant in my bedroom

I have just learned that wait times for Ethiopian infants have been officially increased to from 3-5 months to 6-8 months. I knew it was coming, but I was hoping the 6-8 months wouldn't apply to us since we had already started waiting. But now it looks like it will be for sure six and could be stretched to eight months of waiting. The only way to handle the situation is to not think about adoption- at all. Until Christmas, anyway. So from here on out I will NOT think or write about our adoption- instead I will focus on what's happening in my everyday life and the immediate future. I just thought I should post this warning, more for myself than anybody else, to ensure that our Ethiopian baby will (for now) be banished from my brain until we approach a time in which it will be more likely that our referral would soon come.

Misc.

Today is an important day because...
1) We have been officially "waiting" for two weeks (but who's counting?)
2) Four weeks until school starts. Aaaah!

I took the "what kind of food are you" quiz on blogspot.com. I don't know whether to feel complemented or insulted (I do like Chinese food though!):

You Are Chinese Food
Exotic yet ordinary.People think they've had enough of you, but they're back for more in an hour.

Interesting family fact

Less than an hour ago at dinner this thought popped into my head: my family will soon have four children, born in three different continents (I was born in Oslo, Kristian and Carsten were both born in MA, and our newest member has been/will be born in Ethiopia.) Just felt I should mention it, since it contributes to the idea that my family is quite international.

How it all began

Since now we're just passing the time until we get more news, I thought now would be a good time to tell the story of how our adoption journey began. I don't exactly remember who came up with the idea of adoption and when, but I do remember someone throwing the idea out there when we were sitting in our hotel in London on the way to Kenya about a year and a half ago. At that point, and for a while after, we were thinking of adopting from China. The idea thrilled me since I knew for sure I would have a sister, though the boys didn't exactly warm up to the idea until a few months later. We started the process in June of 2005. We were then right in the middle of moving to Connecticut, and it was a very hectic time- my dad was working in Norway since he'd recently gotten a job working for a Norwegian company (long story short, his old company got bought and he had to look for a new job. He had a few months of vacation time before he started his new job, which is why we could pull off travelling to Kenya for two weeks. My dad was required to work in the Oslo office for a few months before working in New York, so my mom was left to handle us kids and make many, many moving arrangements, including finding a house.)

However, once we were in and settled in our new home and Connecticut, my parents could jump back into the process. We were thinking China until early spring as I remember it, when we had to make the decision to stick with China and wait a long time for an older baby, or switch to Ethiopia where the wait was shorter and the babies were younger. Another plus to the switch was that we would get to travel to Ethiopia, and my family had fallen in love with Africa since the second we set foot in Nairobi. The downside for me was that there was a 50-50 chance that the baby could be a boy or a girl, though my brothers definetely considered this another plus.

We had our home study in mid-May and our dossier was completed and sent July 17. Now all we have to do is endure the next six months or so of waiting, but we have plenty to do in the meantime. My parents are working on getting the house ready, the boys have school, sports and friends, and I myself have quite a bit on my plate: lots of schoolwork, tennis lessons, the track team, band, three clubs (one of which being the International Club, in which I am an office member. This year I plan to do a presentation on Ethiopia and hold drives to collect supplies for the children in Horizon House, an orphanage in Ethiopia where our baby is/will be.) Of course there is also seeing friends and baby-sitting. I tell myself we're almost there and with plenty to do in the meantime, the wait will go by in a flash.

Back!

We just arrived home from five fabulous days in Massachusetts. The weather couldn't have been better, and everyone had such a fun time. I divided my time between seeing my old friends and playing with our former neighbors' baby, James. At eleven months old he is so smart, not to mention adorable. Although I'm hoping for a four-or-five-month old girl (or younger), I would no doubt take James any day, and both of my brothers agree. As for the car ride, it couldn't be easier in our new car. With the new DVD player built into the car (complete with wireless headphones) we didn't hear a peep out of the boys, though it could also be that everyone was so exhausted from the trip. I, for one, don't remember spending so much time laughing and being crazy. I should take it while I can get it- I have the feeling that sometime in the not-so-near-future, I will be spending my time otherwise. But if I can learn anything from baby James, it's that having a baby is hard work, but also a lot of fun.

MA-bound and other news

Today I am going with my mom and my two brothers to Massachusetts to visit old friends and neighbors (we moved from Weston, MA, a year ago.) I probably won't be able to update from there, but I'll be back on Friday. Also, I feel like I should mention that I was watching the Miss Universe pageant last night, and Miss Ethiopia made it into the top 20- out of 86 women, I'd say that's pretty good! Miss USA, however, was the fourth runner-up (yay!), but Miss Puerto Rico ended up winning.

Funny/cute pic of the week

Forget what I said about Fifi ruining my study session. She's really a little angel in a sea of clouds...

I think Carsten had the right idea

When we were in a church in Vienna, there was an open notebook where you could write down who people should pray for. Carsten definetely took this opportunity- he excitedly flipped a few pages and wrote across the whole page. We couldn't help taking a picture.

Who says baby-sitting isn't a real job?

Baby-sitting last night, I got a new perspective on how our "new life" will be. The three-year-old I was sitting for came downstairs after I put him to bed about five million times with a complaint, as I was watching The Sixth Sense, of course. I've seen the movie before so it wasn't like I was scared, but it really ruins the mood of a horror movie when there's a toddler whining in the background, "I can't sleeeeep!"* I love the kid, he's actually really sweet, but I've learned that when I put little kids to bed and say, "just call me if you need anything," they translate that into anything. I can see I have my work cut out for me over the next couple of years.

*He did eventually fall alseep, but not until I: told him to think about his upcoming vacation as he was falling alseep ("I thinked about that already"), told him to think about his birthday party instead ("I thinked about that already"), told him to not think about his sister's snoring (might I add, his sister wasn't making a peep), got him his teddy bear, Mickey Mouse pillow, and water (on separate trips), and moved him into his own bed.

Movie Review

There are so many movies out right now that I want to see that I don't know if I'll be able to see half of them before they go out of theaters. Today, as it was incredibly rainy and gloomy in our area of Connecticut, my whole family went to go see Monster House. Despite the fact that it looked a little young, I still wanted to see it, and I'm glad I did. Although I'm no Ebert & Roeper, I thought it was really good- the animation was fantastic and it was pretty funny. My mom laughed out loud, probably even more than I did. My brothers loved it too. So next time you're stuck with nothing to do (if that's ever true), I highly recommend it. One movie down, about five million more to go...

I think we got along okay with the locals...

Going to Kenya last year makes me even more excited to go to Ethiopia. It was certainly an experience of a life time, but who says you can't have more than one? Here is a picture of Kristian and me in February 2005 with children from the Maasai tribe in Kenya. Let's just say that if things go as well as they did with them, our little baby will be just fine :-).

Just in case you were wondering

As you're reading this, you may be wondering what the face behind this blog looks like (or not.) Anyway, here is a picture of me and my two brothers in front of the Schonbrunn Castle in Vienna earlier this summer (Kristian is on the left and Carsten is center.)

Don't be fooled by her sweet little face

As you can see, Fifi made studying for finals quite difficult this year.

Look at these two cuties!!!!

Here is my little brother Carsten (7) and our kitten, Coco. Clearly this picture was not the most interesting thing happening to Coco at the moment, but it seems as if Carsten is looking for some hidden meaning in the camera lens.

The new center of the universe

It's funny how suddenly, everything seems to revolve around the new little one coming. We recently got a new car- today, in fact- a shiny red Toyota Sienna. It's a luxury I must say (GPS system, DVD player, the works) though I know we'll get used to it fast! Anyway, when we were looking for cars last Saturday all we could think about was baby, baby, baby. This is great for the baby...well, we'll need this for the baby...I guess the baby will sit here. The reason we got the new car wasn't because of the baby though. In a nutshell, my dad left our old van (a Town&Country, also red) in neutral in the driveway, and went inside. When he came back, the car was gone. Turns out, it had rolled backward down the driveway, tipped over the hill, and rolled down into the neighbors' yard, breaking the fence. Fortunately no one was in the car or driveway; unfortunately, we had to get a tow truck to pull it out, and we learned the car was totalled. Of course, all of this occured the one weekend of the year my mom was out of town. That aside, we can now focus (almost) all of our attention on our new little one. That is, as long as we keep a careful eye on our new car...

Welcome

Hi all,
My name is Susanna and I am almost fifteen years old (in 18 days to be exact!) I am currently a big sister to two rambunctious biological brothers, Kristian (10) and Carsten (7) but as of today, my family is waiting for the referal of an infant from Ethiopia. I know we have a long wait ahead of us, but that's just more time to be excited, right? I'm sure a busy upcoming sophomore year will keep me occupied, though, as well as keeping my brothers and two adorable yet trouble-making kitties in line (the kitties are Coco and Fifi, two sisters who will be a year old on August 1st.) I promise to keep this blog updated as best I can, so please visit when you want and feel free to leave a comment!

Just something to wrap our minds around

My mom just said this, and it's amazingly true: now that we're officially "waiting", there's no way around it. We're going to get this baby. And somewhere in the world (okay, Ethiopia), this baby is in some form of existence, whether he/she is already born, or will be soon. In about six months from now, this baby will be living the life of a normal child in our family...as my sibling. I guess I've known this all along, it just seems somehow even more real to me now. At the very least it gives my brain something to focus on besides counting sheep as I'm falling asleep...
